Lama Temple is considered one of Beijing’s most spectacular temple complexes. The Lama Temple was constructed during the 17th Century. The Wanfu Pavilion is home to the 55 foot “future” Buddha, carved from a single block of sandalwood. The Summer Palace is the home of the Dowager Empress. This breathtaking sprawl of grounds includes the marble boat where the Dowager Empress entertained. The lakefront, tree-lined porticos are havens for those who wish to contemplate the great mysteries of life as well as commune with nature. Here, the ordinary people of Beijing come to escape the summer heat to play along the porticos. Notice, too, the exquisite ceilings of the walkway. Looking for some U.S. snacks? They are here in the kiosks on the grounds. I was introduced to Pringles here last year. Finally, our tour includes the Hutong District. We will take you inside a typical Hutong family compound and experience life within the protective walls of the Hutong. The traditional Hutong houses multiple generations of a family. We will see the various rooms set around an interior courtyard and experience the sense of family the Chinese espouse. This is a restored area that depicts how the people of Beijing lived for hundreds of year. Again, the presence of a lake and river add serenity to the district. Cross over the hand-carved marble bridge into the business area. And you will visit a traditional Hutong where you will be greeted by the family living there. The traditional Hutong houses multiple generations of a family within its protective gates. We will see the various rooms set around the interior courtyard and experience the sense of family the Chinese espouse. |

Thirteen of the sixteen Ming Emperors are buried in China’s finest example of imperial tomb architecture. We will travel the Spirit Way, part of a four-mile approach to the tombs, lined with statutes of officials, soldiers, animals and mythical creatures. Again, we will see the Chinese use of gates to impede evil spirits from entering an area. Next we will travel to the Great Wall of China, begun in the second century B.C. Only recently a heretofore unknown section of the wall has been uncovered, dating back to the Third Century A.D. This wall was breached in the 13th Century by the Mongols and again in the 17th Century by the Manchu. The last portion of the wall was completed in the 16th Century. It remains one of the Man-Made Wonders of the World. We will stop at a lovely roadside restaurant for luncheon. And then to the sites of the 2008 Olympics. We will stop at the Water Cube and the Bird’s Nest. |
